Who are the stakeholders?

I was thinking today about a conversation I had with a friend of mine about a survey a friend of hers gave some students. Certain people in the building were not happy with the results and wanted to skew the information. Blinders! Ask the kids and they will tell you. Then believe them. Anyway, this train of thought led me to the thought about stakeholders in our schools. It’s a term thrown around a lot, usually as in “involve all stakeholders in the (fill in the blank) process.” We have site-based committees and even some design committees, made up of teachers and occasionally parents. Here’s a really big shocker: why not have a site-based committee or a design team consisting of students? And eventually actually HAVE STUDENTS ON YOUR DESIGN COMMITTEE. I mentioned this in an earlier blog. Why aren’t students partners in their own education? Students should see and have input on the campus improvement plan. I’m sure they’d have great ideas on how to achieve the goals and ideas on why they’re not being achieved. I’m also sure students would have great input on how to design engaging lessons. If we’re going to talk stakeholders, don’t students have the greatest stake in their education?
